How to read GPU specs

8 min readUpdated July 2026

VRAM type, boost clock, TDP, bus width and card length — what actually matters for your build and what’s marketing.

VRAM: capacity matters more than type

16GB of one VRAM type and 16GB of a newer one will feel nearly identical in most games today — capacity is what keeps textures from stuttering at high resolutions, not the memory type's name. Only chase a newer VRAM type if the card attached to it is otherwise the better buy; don't pay a premium for the label alone.

Boost clock is a ceiling, not a promise

The boost clock on every spec sheet is the card's rated peak under ideal cooling — real sustained clocks depend on your case airflow and the specific board's cooler, and usually sit a little below it. Treat boost clock as a rough tier indicator within the same chipset family, not a number to compare across different GPU generations.

TDP tells you what your PSU and case need to handle

TDP, in watts, is the card's rated power draw — the number that actually determines whether your power supply and case airflow can handle it. A 100W gap between two cards in the same tier usually means one runs hotter and louder under load, even if their boost clocks look similar on paper.

Card length is the most-ignored spec

A card that's 10mm too long for your case is a returned card, full stop — check your case's clearance before you check the price. Every listing here shows length in millimeters for exactly this reason; it's the spec most likely to silently disqualify a great deal.

What to prioritize for your build

For most gaming builds, VRAM capacity and boost clock within your tier matter most; TDP and length matter most if you're working within a small case or an older PSU. Chipset and VRAM type are worth knowing but rarely worth paying a premium for on their own — check the price and the 90-day trend before the marketing spec sheet.
